Cheng Hung Kay graduated from Guangzhou Foreign Languages School in 1968 and worked in Hainan as a farmer between 1969 and 1972. He was transferred to work in Guangdong Native Product Import & Export Corporation since 1973 and graduated again from Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade in 1986.  

He led the creation from closed shell pistachio to artificial opening pistachios for California in 1975 and was the first one to assist the California industry to sort pistachio kernels to a value added product. He was also the first one to work with Hong Kong pistachio and macadamia dealers, and named pistachio in Chinese in 1974 as “Happy Nut” and macadamia as “Hawaiian Nut” in 1975. He was also the first one to import California almond and Australian macadamia to China. He introduced the Chinese pine nuts and blanched de-bitter apricot kernels to the US market in 1978. He worked with the Chinese cashew industry to establish the national standard of cashew kernels and CNSL since 1973, and ongoing to Chinese pine nut kernels, pumpkin seed kernels and pitted dates.

In December 2001, he was elected as Chairman of the tree nuts sub-chamber of the CCCFNA (China Tree Nuts Association). On May 23, 2010 he was awarded the INC Individual Golden Nut Award. In 2018 he received the Friendship Award in the 8th International Macadamia Symposium and appointed as honorary adviser of the International Macadamia Research and Development Center from November 2018 till September 2021. He is INC Ambassador in China for Hong Kong.

His company CHK Trading Co., Ltd is a grower, processor, importer and exporter of macadamia nuts worldwide.
