Cheng Hung Kay led the creation of artificial opening pistachios from California in 1975. He was the first to assist the California industry to sort pistachio kernels and turn closed shell pistachios into a value added product; the first to work with a Hong Kong pistachio and macadamia dealer, and to name pistachios in Chinese (Happy Nuts) in 1974 and macadamias (Hawaiian Nuts) in 1975. He introduced the Chinese pine nuts to the US in 1978. He worked with the Chinese industry to establish the national standard of cashew kernels and CNSL since 1973, then on going to pine nut kernels, macadamia kernels, walnut meats, and pitted dates. In December 2001, he was elected as Chairman of the tree nuts sub-chamber of the CCCFNA (China Tree Nuts Association). On May 23, 2010, he was awarded the INC Individual Golden Award. In October 2018, he was awarded the Friendship Award in the 8th International Macadamia Symposium and appointed as the honorary adviser of the International Macadamia Research and Development Center from November 2018 until September 2021. He is a member of the INC Board of Trustees and Ambassador in China for Hong Kong.
